This significant bibliographic reference series served as a comprehensive trade catalog for the Dutch book market during the nineteenth century. Initiated as a continuation of the work by J. de Jong, which covered the period from 1790 to 1832, these volumes were published by the Gebr. van Cleef firm in The Hague. The series was designed to provide booksellers, librarians, and scholars with a systematic record of books, prints, and maps issued or reprinted in the Netherlands, acting as an essential tool for tracking the rapidly expanding publishing output of the era.

The publication was structured to document the vital details of each entry, including the publisher, year of release, physical dimensions, and original pricing. By maintaining such rigorous documentation, the Gebr. van Cleef firm aimed to stabilize the fragmented trade environment of the time. The series is widely regarded by bibliographers as an invaluable primary source for understanding the literary and cartographic landscape of the nineteenth-century Netherlands, as it captured an era of industrial growth in printing and distribution that would otherwise be difficult to reconstruct.
