Ambrosio; Or, the Monk: A Romance

First published anonymously in 1796, The Monk was written by Matthew Gregory Lewis when he was only nineteen years old. Deeply influenced by the German Schauerroman or 'shudder-novel' tradition, Lewis intended to outdo the gothic intensity of Ann Radcliffe, focusing instead on shocking depictions of superstition, religious hypocrisy, and the supernatural. The novel centers on the spectacular moral decline of Ambrosio, a pious Capuchin monk, and became one of the most controversial works of the era.

Upon its release, the book caused an immediate scandal due to its explicit portrayals of sexuality, violence, and blasphemy. While it earned Lewis a reputation for depravity, it was also a massive commercial success that solidified the tropes of the Gothic genre, including the corrupted monk and the pact with the devil. The work remains a foundational text in the history of English literature, frequently studied for its radical rejection of the Enlightenment's moral constraints.
