Where it came from
Matthew Henry first published this comprehensive commentary between 1708 and 1710, driven by his desire to provide a practical and devotional resource for everyday readers rather than strictly academic scholars. Henry was a prominent Nonconformist minister in England, and his work was born out of his pastoral practice of preaching through the Bible systematically to his congregation in Chester, seeking to make the complexities of scripture accessible and applicable to the spiritual life.
The design of the work prioritizes clarity and homiletic utility, reflecting Henry's background as a preacher who valued direct, accessible language. Following his death, other ministers completed the portions he left unfinished, ensuring the series maintained a cohesive, thorough approach to biblical interpretation. It has remained a significant fixture in theological study for centuries, widely praised for its warmth, piety, and enduring influence on both clergy and laypeople.
