Where it came from
Originally published in Polish in 1993 as Ostatnie życzenie, this collection of short stories serves as the introduction to Andrzej Sapkowski’s sprawling Witcher universe. It establishes the central character, Geralt of Rivia, through a series of narratives that deconstruct traditional fairy tales with a gritty, Slavic-inspired lens. The collection was conceived to introduce readers to the mercenary lifestyle of a monster hunter navigating a world defined by moral ambiguity rather than clear-cut heroism.
This specific edition, published by Dark Horse Comics, is part of a broader effort to bring Sapkowski's prose to a wider international audience, often featuring art and design aesthetics that align with the multimedia popularity of the Witcher franchise. The cover art and layout are designed to evoke the dark, atmospheric fantasy setting that defines the series, aiming to appeal to both long-time fans of the novels and new readers drawn in by the adaptations. It has been critically recognized for its influence on the modern fantasy genre, shifting the focus from epic tropes to the psychological landscape of its protagonist.
