Where it came from
The manga adaptation of Lucy Maud Montgomery's classic 1908 novel was illustrated by Yumiko Igarashi, a prominent artist best known for her work on Candy Candy. Produced during the late 1990s, this series was designed to translate the pastoral charm of Prince Edward Island into the distinct visual language of shojo manga, emphasizing expressive character designs and the dramatic, flowing aesthetic that characterized Igarashi's body of work during that period.
This adaptation sought to reintroduce Montgomery's narrative to a Japanese audience through a medium that allowed for a heightened focus on Anne Shirley's internal life and emotional growth. Upon its release, the work was received as a respectful, albeit stylized, interpretation of the source material. It remains a notable example of how cross-cultural literary classics were frequently re-imagined by manga artists to appeal to new generations of readers.
