The Antiquariats-Katalog issued by Matthias Lempertz in Bonn represents a quintessential example of 19th-century German antiquarian book trade documentation. Matthias Lempertz established his firm in 1845, quickly becoming a central figure in the European rare book market. These catalogs were produced to facilitate the systematic sale of private libraries and specialized collections, reflecting the burgeoning intellectual rigor of the period's bibliophilic culture.

The design of these catalogs prioritizes utility and archival precision, typical of Lempertz’s methodical approach to inventory. By employing consistent titling conventions—often alternating between German and Latinized headers like 'Verzeichniss von Büchern'—the firm catered to both local scholars and an international network of collectors. The documentation is valued today primarily as a primary source for provenance research, providing a snapshot of the literary circulation and academic interests of mid-to-late 19th-century Germany.
