Armored Fleet DaiRugger XV originated as a 1982 Japanese television series produced by Toei Animation, conceptualized during a period of experimentation within the super robot genre. It is best known in Western markets for being the source material for the second and third seasons of the original Voltron series. The narrative centers on a massive expeditionary force tasked with surveying the galaxy, a departure from the more common localized defense tropes of the era.

The character and mecha designs were executed with a focus on modularity, reflecting the series' central gimmick of fifteen separate vehicles combining into a single gestalt robot. While Yoshiaki Tsuhara contributed to the development of the series' lore and structure, the visual execution was a collaborative effort typical of Toei's production pipeline at the time.
