Arte

Arte is a historical manga series written and illustrated by Kei Ookubo, first serialized in Monthly Comic Zenon in 2013. Set in 16th-century Florence during the Renaissance, the narrative follows a young noblewoman who defies the gender norms of her time to pursue a career as a professional painter. The series is celebrated for its meticulous research into the period’s art techniques, social hierarchies, and the challenges faced by women in the apprenticeship system of the era.

Ookubo’s artistic style is defined by a blend of authentic historical detail and a refined character design aesthetic that honors the spirit of the Renaissance without sacrificing the readability of a modern manga. The series received significant critical attention for its empowering themes and architectural accuracy, leading to its adaptation into an anime television series in 2020, which further expanded its international reach and established it as a notable entry in the historical fiction genre.
