Where it came from
Audition was created by South Korean manhwa artist Chon Kye-Young in the late 1990s, debuting during a period of significant growth for the Korean comics industry. The series follows the protagonist, Chon-i, as she hunts for four musical geniuses to form a band and win a national competition. Chon Kye-Young chose to focus on the intersection of teenage angst and artistic ambition, grounding the fantastical premise in the raw emotional landscapes of her young characters.
The series is noted for its distinctive visual style, characterized by elongated proportions and highly expressive, fashion-forward character designs that reflect the late 90s aesthetic. It was met with immense popularity upon release, becoming a cultural phenomenon in South Korea and a foundational title in the manhwa boom. The work's blend of slapstick comedy, musical drama, and melodrama solidified Chon Kye-Young's status as a leading figure in the medium.
