Where it came from
Azumi was serialized in Big Comic Superior from 1994 to 2008, authored and illustrated by Yuu Koyama. Set during the early Edo period, the narrative follows a young woman trained from childhood as an elite assassin tasked with eliminating enemies of the Tokugawa shogunate to ensure national stability. Koyama brought a distinct, grounded artistic style to the jidaigeki genre, emphasizing the psychological toll of state-sanctioned violence on his protagonist.
The series became a touchstone in historical seinen manga, noted for its stark contrast between the serene landscapes of feudal Japan and the brutal efficiency of Azumi's martial techniques. The work was highly regarded for its pacing and character development, eventually receiving the Shogakukan Manga Award in 1997. Its success catalyzed multiple adaptations, including live-action films directed by Ryuhei Kitamura and a long-running stage production, solidifying its place in modern Japanese pop culture.
