Baby Princess originated as a multimedia project created by Sakurako Kimino, the author behind the popular Sister Princess franchise. First introduced in Dengeki G's Magazine in 2007, the series centered on the concept of a protagonist living with nineteen distinct younger sisters. The project was designed to be interactive, allowing fans to vote on character traits and developments, reflecting the reader-participation model that had previously fueled the success of Kimino's earlier works.

The character designs were primarily handled by Natsume Tenma, whose soft, illustrative style aimed to emphasize the distinct archetypes and personality traits of the nineteen siblings. The volumes served as a narrative expansion of the magazine serials, framing the sisters' daily lives in a lighthearted, aspirational domestic setting. While the project achieved a dedicated niche following and eventually spawned an original video animation, it is best understood as a significant example of the late-2000s trend of high-concept, character-focused light novel franchises.
