Babylonia no Shishi

Babylonia no Shishi, or Lion of Babylonia, is a historical manga series written and illustrated by You Higuri. Serialized during the late 1990s, the work reflects the artist's signature approach to historical romanticism, blending dramatic narrative arcs with the ornate, flowing character designs that define her aesthetic. Higuri drew heavily upon the aesthetic sensibilities of the shoujo genre, prioritizing emotive storytelling and detailed period-inspired fashion, which was highly characteristic of the manga landscape in Japan during this era.

The series centers on the historical figure of Nebuchadnezzar II, reinterpreting his life through a lens of grand romance and political intrigue. Higuri sought to humanize the ancient king, placing him within a lush, stylized version of Mesopotamia that allowed for her expressive illustration style to flourish. While not as widely cited as her other works, such as Cantarella, the series remains a notable example of the trend toward historical epics in manga, serving as a testament to the audience's enduring fascination with ancient civilizations interpreted through contemporary visual tropes.
