Baccano!

Baccano! originated as a light novel series written by Ryohgo Narita and illustrated by Katsumi Enami, first published in 2003 under the Dengeki Bunko imprint. Inspired by the nonlinear storytelling of films like Pulp Fiction and the atmosphere of 1930s Prohibition-era America, Narita crafted a sprawling narrative centered on an ensemble cast of bootleggers, thieves, and immortals whose paths intersect on a transcontinental train. The series earned early recognition when it won the gold prize at the 9th Dengeki Novel Prize in 2002.

The distinctive visual identity of the series, defined by Enami's dynamic, cinematic character designs, became a hallmark of the franchise's transition from print to its acclaimed 2007 anime adaptation. The work is noted for its fragmented, non-chronological structure, which demands careful attention from the reader to piece together the chaotic events occurring across different decades. Over the years, it has maintained a dedicated cult following for its unconventional narrative rhythm and its stylistic blend of historical fiction with supernatural elements.
