Where it came from
Bakumatsu Rock: Howling Soul is a manga adaptation originating from the multimedia franchise Bakumatsu Rock, which debuted in 2014. Developed primarily by Marvelous, the franchise reimagines the Bakumatsu period of Japanese history by replacing traditional political strife with a rock-and-roll revolution. This specific volume serves to expand the narrative established by the accompanying rhythm video game, focusing on the stylized, high-energy aesthetic that characterizes the series' alternate-history premise.
The manga was authored by Shinshuu Ueda, who was tasked with translating the game's musical and visual themes into a static print medium. Ueda focused on capturing the exaggerated character designs and the intense, rebellious spirit of the protagonists who fight against the shogunate using the power of music. Upon its release, the volume was received primarily as a tie-in product aimed at fans of the franchise, serving as a companion piece to the broader anime and game adaptations that defined the series' peak popularity.
