Where it came from
Base Boys was serialized in Weekly Shonen Jump during the late 1980s, emerging during a period when sports manga, particularly baseball-themed stories, were a cornerstone of the magazine's identity. Created by Niwano Makoto, the series reflects the high-energy, character-driven aesthetic prevalent in the shonen landscape of the era, focusing on the camaraderie and competitive spirit inherent in amateur baseball.
The design and visual direction were guided by Niwano's signature bold lines and expressive character archetypes. While the series did not achieve the long-term cultural ubiquity of contemporary baseball hits like Touch or Major, it remains a recognized title among collectors of 1980s manga, serving as a representative example of the genre's stylistic evolution and the fast-paced narrative demands of the weekly anthology format.
