Where it came from
The Bell of Peace series was conceived by Keiji Nakazawa, the mangaka best known for his seminal work Barefoot Gen. Following his long-term focus on the trauma and aftermath of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima, Nakazawa created this series to serve as a visual and literary continuation of his pacifist advocacy. The works were developed as a way to preserve the memory of the event for younger generations, emphasizing the fragility of life and the necessity of international disarmament.
The design and narrative tone of the series are deeply rooted in Nakazawa's signature direct, unadorned art style, which prioritizes emotional resonance over stylistic flourish. By utilizing the bell as a central motif, Nakazawa drew upon the historical and symbolic significance of the peace bells found in Japan, particularly those dedicated to the victims of the atomic bombings. Upon release, the series was received primarily as an educational and memorial project, garnering respect for its earnest commitment to anti-war discourse rather than its commercial reach.
