Where it came from
The Berliner Stadtadressbuch served as the primary directory for residents, businesses, and government institutions in West Berlin during the Cold War era. Published annually, the 1975 edition was structured in multiple volumes to manage the exhaustive lists of names and addresses required for civic life. These directories were essential bureaucratic tools, documenting the socio-economic landscape of a city partitioned by the Berlin Wall and serving as an indispensable resource for commercial logistics and personal communication.
The design of the 1975 edition followed the traditional, functional aesthetic of German civic record-keeping, emphasizing legibility and accessibility through a strict grid-based typographical system. Produced by the Berliner Adreßbuch-Verlag, the directory was designed for long-term reference rather than visual flair, focusing on dense data organization. Upon release, it was received as a vital piece of municipal infrastructure, prized for its comprehensive scope in mapping the complex, isolated urban environment of West Berlin.
