Where it came from
B.Ichi was created by Atsushi Ookubo and serialized in Monthly Shonen Gangan between 2001 and 2002. As Ookubo's debut series before his breakthrough with Soul Eater, it serves as a foundational look at the themes of supernatural combat and kinetic action that would later define his career. The story follows a young boy named Ichinushi who wields the power to manipulate matter, navigating a world where he is hunted for his unique abilities.
The character designs and paneling in B.Ichi demonstrate the early development of Ookubo's distinctive, sharp-edged art style. While the series was cut short after four volumes due to editorial decisions, it is frequently revisited by fans of his later work to trace the artistic evolution of his dynamic action sequences and idiosyncratic character aesthetics. The series remains a notable artifact of early 2000s shonen manga transition periods.
