Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon

Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon was created by mangaka Naoko Takeuchi and first serialized in the Japanese magazine Nakayoshi in 1991. Born from Takeuchi’s interest in astronomy, mythology, and the aesthetics of magical girls, the series expanded her previous one-shot, Codename: Sailor V. It was conceived as a fusion of the sentai genre—typically dominated by male protagonists—with the feminine tropes of the shōjo demographic, fundamentally changing the genre by portraying young women as powerful, independent warriors.

The character designs were heavily influenced by Takeuchi’s personal affinity for high fashion, particularly the works of Chanel and Dior, which informed the distinct silhouettes and transformations of the Sailor Guardians. Upon release, the manga was an immediate success, leading to an iconic anime adaptation by Toei Animation.
