Where it came from
BlazBlue originated as a high-definition 2D fighting game franchise developed by Arc System Works, led by producer and artist Toshimichi Mori. The series, which debuted in 2008 as BlazBlue: Calamity Trigger, was conceived as a spiritual successor to the Guilty Gear series, aiming to push the boundaries of sprite-based animation on modern consoles. Mori’s design philosophy emphasized intricate, gothic-anime aesthetics and complex lore, creating a distinctive visual identity that relied heavily on character-driven narratives.
The transition of the franchise into print media and art volumes reflects its expansive world-building, which spans multiple sequels and spin-off stories. These volumes, often featuring Mori's original character designs and thematic illustrations, serve to organize the dense, branching timelines of the series. They were received by fans as essential compendiums for understanding the character hierarchies and the central conflict between Ragna the Bloodedge and the Novus Orbis Librarium.
