Where it came from
Blue Giant, authored by Shinichi Ishizuka, began serialization in Big Comic in 2013. The series follows the ambitious journey of Dai Miyamoto, a high school student who devotes himself to the saxophone with the goal of becoming the world's best jazz player. Ishizuka drew inspiration from the improvisational nature of jazz, seeking to capture the visceral intensity of live performance through the static medium of manga, which led to a visual style characterized by expressive, rhythmic line work.
The work gained significant critical acclaim for its ability to convey audible sound through visual storytelling, eventually winning the 20th Japan Media Arts Festival Manga Division Grand Prize and the 62nd Shogakukan Manga Award. Its success spurred a broader franchise, including international sequels like Blue Giant Supreme and Blue Giant Explorer, and solidified Ishizuka’s reputation for deeply researched, character-driven narratives.
