Where it came from
Bokura ga Ita, known in English as We Were There, was serialized by mangaka Yuuki Obata in the shoujo magazine Bessatsu Shoujo Comic starting in 2002. Created during a peak era for emotional, character-driven romance manga, the series follows the complex relationship between Nanami Takahashi and Motoharu Yano across several years of their lives. Obata intended the work to capture the lingering pain and growth inherent in high school romances, opting for a soft, emotive artistic style that complemented the story's focus on internal monologue and psychological development.
The series became a significant success within the shoujo demographic, eventually winning the 50th Shogakukan Manga Award in the shoujo category in 2005. Its reception was largely defined by its departure from typical lighthearted romance tropes, as readers responded strongly to its mature handling of grief, infidelity, and the challenges of sustaining long-distance relationships. The manga’s influence led to a successful anime adaptation and two live-action feature films, cementing its status as a notable example of contemporary Japanese romantic drama.
