Books xi. xii. of the Aeneid of Vergil, ed. with notes by F. Storr

This volume is part of a nineteenth-century scholarly series published by Rivingtons, designed specifically for students in the English public school tradition. At a time when the study of classical Latin was the bedrock of elite education, Francis Storr—a prominent educator and translator—prepared these editions to make Virgil’s epic accessible to learners. By providing targeted notes and philological guidance, the edition sought to bridge the gap between intermediate linguistic competency and the poetic complexity of the Aeneid’s final books.

The editorial philosophy behind this series emphasized pedagogical clarity, focusing on the syntax and cultural context necessary for young readers to navigate the conclusion of Aeneas’s journey. F. Storr’s approach was rooted in the rigorous, disciplined academic culture of late Victorian Britain, where such texts were standard tools for mastering the dactylic hexameter and the sophisticated narrative structure of Roman epic. It remains a testament to the era’s commitment to preserving classical literacy through standardized academic commentary.
