Boswell's Life of Samuel Johnson, LL.D

First published in 1791, James Boswell's Life of Samuel Johnson is widely considered the greatest biography in the English language. Boswell, a Scottish lawyer and diarist, spent years shadowing the renowned lexicographer and conversationalist Samuel Johnson, meticulously recording his observations, letters, and conversations. This work moved away from the hagiographic tradition of the era to present a vivid, deeply human portrait of Johnson, capturing his intellectual intensity, personal eccentricities, and profound melancholy.

The book's enduring influence stems from Boswell’s innovative methodology, which utilized extensive notes taken contemporaneously to recreate scenes with dramatic detail. By documenting the cultural life of 18th-century London, including interactions with figures like Joshua Reynolds and Oliver Goldsmith, Boswell established the modern standard for biographical writing. The specific ISBN 9781359089908 refers to a modern reprint edition, which serves to keep this foundational text accessible to contemporary scholars and general readers interested in literary history.
