Bratanki, published in the mid-19th century, is a historical novel by the prolific Polish writer Józef Ignacy Kraszewski. Set against the backdrop of the early 18th century, the narrative draws heavily on historical legends and the complex political landscape of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. Kraszewski, often regarded as one of the most significant figures in 19th-century Polish literature, wrote the work during a period of intense national interest in historical identity and the preservation of cultural memory.

The novel is characteristic of Kraszewski’s extensive body of work, which aimed to document Polish history through accessible, fictionalized storytelling. By anchoring the plot in the traditions of the early 1700s, the author sought to evoke the atmosphere of the Saxon era. The text reflects the author's meticulous research and his dedication to creating a bridge between historical fact and folklore for his contemporary audience, cementing his reputation as a primary chronicler of Polish heritage.
