Break Blade

Break Blade, also known as Broken Blade, began serialization in 2006 under the Flex Comix label. Written and illustrated by Yoshinaga Yunosuke, the series was conceived as a high-fantasy mecha epic that eschewed common science-fiction tropes in favor of a world where magic and geology intersect. Set in the continent of Cruzon, the story centers on Rygart Arrow, an individual born without the ability to manipulate quartz—the primary power source for the world's machinery—placing him in a unique position when he discovers an ancient, non-quartz-powered Golem.

Yoshinaga’s aesthetic approach for the series focused on tactile, industrial-leaning mecha designs, contrasting sharply with the organic, magic-infused environment. The manga gained traction for its political complexity and grounded character dynamics, eventually leading to a prominent six-part theatrical film series produced by Production I.G and Xebec.
