Where it came from
Buncho-sama and Me is an autobiographical manga series created by the acclaimed mangaka Ima Ichiko. First serialized in the late 1990s, the work chronicles the author's daily life alongside her beloved Java sparrows. Ichiko, widely celebrated for her atmospheric and supernatural storytelling in works like Hyakki Yako Sho, stepped away from her typical dark fantasy genre to produce this slice-of-life series, offering readers an intimate and humorous look at the quirks and charms of bird ownership.
The series is noted for its gentle, observational tone and Ichiko’s refined, expressive art style, which captures the distinct personalities of her avian companions. It emerged during a period of rising interest in pet-focused manga in Japan, yet stands out for its earnest and non-sentimental depiction of the bond between human and bird. It was well-received by fans of the author who appreciated the opportunity to see a more domestic, personal side of her creative output, and it remains a touchstone for enthusiasts of avian-themed literature.
