Where it came from
Captive Hearts of Oz is a manga series authored by Ryo Maruya that reimagines L. Frank Baum's classic world through the lens of shojo manga aesthetics. Serialized in the late 2000s, the work was conceived as a creative subversion of the original narrative, placing Dorothy Gale and familiar companions into a darker, more complex, and romance-driven interpretation of the Land of Oz.
The character designs and visual storytelling reflect the stylistic conventions popular in Japanese youth-oriented manga during that period. Maruya emphasized dramatic emotional stakes and gothic-inflected character redesigns to differentiate this version from the well-known cinematic adaptations, ultimately aiming to appeal to readers looking for an unconventional, character-focused take on the literary source material.
