Carmina Princetonia: a collection of the songs of Princeton College, compiled ... by M. Dennis, Frank B. Colton, J. H. Dulles, editors

Carmina Princetonia was first published in the mid-19th century as a curated anthology of the vocal traditions defining student life at the College of New Jersey, now known as Princeton University. Compiled by a student committee including Martin Dennis, Frank B. Colton, and J. H. Dulles, the volume was intended to codify the informal musical culture of the campus, capturing everything from traditional glee club standards to spontaneous folk songs and parodies that had previously been passed down orally among the undergraduates.

The editorial work reflects the Victorian collegiate ideal of the era, where songbooks served as essential artifacts of school spirit and social cohesion. By formalizing these lyrics and scores, the editors sought to preserve the specific character of Princeton's student body for alumni and future classes. The collection remains a significant piece of academic ephemera, offering a window into the evolution of American university life and the distinct social traditions that defined the nineteenth-century Ivy League experience.
