Where it came from
Published in 1889, this comprehensive catalogue was commissioned by the Library Committee of the Corporation of the City of London to provide a systematic record of the Guildhall Library's rapidly expanding collection. At this stage in the library's history, the institution was transitioning from a purely administrative archive into a significant public reference facility, and this volume served as an essential tool for scholars and citizens to navigate the wide array of historical records, manuscripts, and printed books acquired during the Victorian era.
The volume reflects the meticulous bibliographic standards of the late nineteenth century, prioritizing clarity and accessibility for researchers interested in the history of London. Designed as a key to the library's holdings up to June 1889, the work was received by the academic community of the time as a vital instrument for archival research. It stands today as a testament to the Library's commitment to curating and documenting the civic identity of London during a period of substantial municipal growth.
