Catalogue of the Library of the Peabody Institute of the City of Baltimore: M - O

The Catalogue of the Library of the Peabody Institute of the City of Baltimore was compiled under the direction of the library's first provost, Nathaniel H. Morison. Published in the late 19th century, this multi-volume set was intended to serve as a comprehensive index for one of the most significant reference collections in the United States at the time. Its creation reflected the scholarly rigor of the Gilded Age, aiming to provide academics and researchers with an exhaustive bibliographic resource that transcended the limitations of contemporary smaller catalogs.

The design of the catalogue is characterized by its meticulous alphabetical arrangement and systematic cross-referencing, which was considered an architectural marvel of library science upon its release. Morison and his staff sought to catalog a wide breadth of human knowledge, from classical texts to contemporary scientific inquiries. The publication was well-received by the academic community for its accuracy and thoroughness, serving as a vital tool for bibliographic research long before the advent of digital library databases.
