Checklist of United States Public Documents 1789-1909, Congressional: To Close of Sixtieth Congress; Departmental: to End of Calendar Year 1909

The Checklist of United States Public Documents 1789-1909 was prepared by the Office of the Superintendent of Documents and published by the Government Printing Office in 1911. It was commissioned as a definitive bibliographic inventory to organize the vast output of federal publications spanning the first 120 years of the United States government. During this period, the sheer volume of congressional and departmental reports had become difficult for librarians and researchers to track, necessitating a comprehensive reference tool to standardize the identification and classification of these public records.

The design of the work focuses on utility, prioritizing clarity and systemic ordering over aesthetic presentation. By categorizing documents by their originating department and congressional session, the compilers established a foundational structure for federal documentation that influenced subsequent archival practices. Upon its release, it was regarded as an essential instrument for scholarly research and library management, providing a vital key to understanding the legislative and administrative history of the young nation.
