Where it came from
Chi no Wadachi, known in English as Blood on the Tracks, began serialization in Big Comic Superior in 2017. Created by mangaka Oshimi Shuuzou, the series emerged from his long-standing interest in exploring the claustrophobic and often unsettling nature of human relationships, specifically the intense, psychological bond between a mother and her son. Oshimi drew inspiration from his own life experiences and observations to construct a narrative that intentionally disrupts standard genre tropes, focusing on the slow-burn disintegration of a seemingly normal domestic life.
The artistic style of the manga is characterized by minimalist backgrounds and highly emotive, often distorted facial expressions, which Oshimi utilizes to emphasize the protagonists' internal psychological states. This visual language was a deliberate choice to ground the story in a sense of palpable realism while heightening the reader's feeling of unease. Since its debut, the series has been widely praised by critics for its masterful pacing and its unflinching depiction of codependency, securing Oshimi's reputation as a preeminent voice in contemporary psychological horror manga.
