Where it came from
Chihayafuru: Middle School Arc is a prose novel adaptation and expansion of the celebrated manga series Chihayafuru by Yuki Suetsugu. Written by Tokiumi Yui and published by Kodansha, this volume serves as a narrative companion, delving into the formative years of the protagonists before the events of the main series. It focuses on the psychological motivations and the early competitive aspirations that define the characters' lifelong dedication to the card game of competitive karuta.
The design of the volume aligns with the aesthetic established by the broader Chihayafuru franchise, often featuring cover illustrations that evoke the grace and intensity of the poem-based sport. Tokiumi Yui was selected to flesh out these character backstories, aiming to provide a deeper understanding of the bonds formed during middle school. The work has been well-regarded by fans of the series for successfully translating the internal emotional landscapes of the manga into a narrative prose format.
