Church missionary intelligencer

The Church Missionary Intelligencer was established in 1849 as the primary periodical for the Church Missionary Society, a major evangelical organization within the Church of England. It served as a monthly record of global missionary efforts, providing members and the public with detailed reports, theological reflections, and geographical observations from missions across Africa, Asia, and the Americas. The publication was instrumental in fostering interest in overseas mission work during the height of the Victorian era.

The publication was designed to balance administrative transparency with the cultivation of missionary zeal. Its content often featured travelogues and ethnographic summaries that, while reflective of the colonial and religious perspectives of the period, served as vital communication links between distant mission outposts and the society's headquarters in London. Over time, it underwent various editorial shifts to maintain its relevance, eventually being renamed the Church Missionary Review in the early 20th century, cementing its legacy as a key primary source for historians studying 19th-century religious expansion.
