Classified Catalogue According to the Dewey Decimal Classification: English Books

The Classified Catalogue of English Books was published by the New York Free Circulating Library, specifically for its George Bruce Branch, as an essential tool for public access to literature in the late nineteenth century. Established to facilitate the democratic distribution of knowledge, the library system sought to organize its growing collection by implementing the Dewey Decimal Classification, a system that was then revolutionizing library science by replacing fixed-location shelving with a flexible, subject-based taxonomy.

The design of this catalogue reflects the functional, utilitarian aesthetic of late Victorian-era bibliographic records. It was created to guide patrons through a curated selection of English-language volumes, serving both as an internal inventory and a public finding aid. While it is now primarily a historical artifact documenting the evolution of library organization, it remains a testament to the early pedagogical efforts of the New York library system to make information discoverable and accessible to a diverse urban population.
