Where it came from
Cleo and the Forest of the Undead is a manga series authored by Umeki Taisuke, emerging from the mid-2000s landscape of Japanese dark fantasy and shonen-adjacent action comics. Created during a period when supernatural horror themes were gaining significant traction in serialized manga magazines, the series follows the eponymous protagonist as she navigates a treacherous, lore-heavy environment populated by undead entities. The narrative focuses on atmospheric world-building and character-driven stakes within an isolated, mystical forest setting.
Umeki Taisuke's design approach for the series balances visceral monster aesthetics with a distinct, sharp-lined character style typical of the era's action-horror genre. The work is noted by collectors for its commitment to a grim, gothic tone, aiming to bridge the gap between high-octane battle sequences and psychological suspense. While it remains a niche entry in the broader canon of supernatural manga, it is frequently cited by enthusiasts of early 2000s dark fantasy for its consistent artistic vision and thematic dedication to its central premise.
