Where it came from
Codename: Sailor V was created by Naoko Takeuchi in 1991, serving as the immediate predecessor to the global phenomenon Sailor Moon. Initially serialized in the magazine Run-Run, the series follows the adventures of Minako Aino, a teenager who discovers her supernatural destiny under the guidance of a white cat named Artemis. The manga was conceived as a standalone action-comedy focused on a lone magical girl, setting the thematic foundation for the team-based transformations and cosmic lore that would later define the Sailor Senshi universe.
Takeuchi designed the series with a focus on vibrant, energetic character archetypes and fashion-forward aesthetics, drawing from the trends of early 1990s Japanese youth culture. The artwork is noted for its sleek, angular style, reflecting Takeuchi’s interest in high-end design and cinematic storytelling. While the series was eventually overshadowed by its successor, it remains highly regarded by fans and scholars for its historical role in establishing the modern magical girl genre and for Takeuchi's distinct, influential visual language.
