Compton's Pictured Encyclopedia -- to Inspire Ambition, to Stimulate the Imagination, to Provide the Inquiring Mind with Accurate Information, Told in an Interesting Style, and Thus Lead Into Broader Fields of Knowledge, Such is the Purpose of this Work

Compton's Pictured Encyclopedia was first published in 1922 by F.E. Compton & Company, emerging during a period when the American educational market prioritized accessible, visually rich reference materials for the home. The series was designed specifically to bridge the gap between dry academic texts and the curiosity of children, utilizing a 'pictured' format that integrated photographs, diagrams, and maps directly into the narrative text to maintain engagement.

The editorial philosophy was centered on the concept of 'painless education,' where complex subjects were synthesized into an interesting, readable style. Over its many decades of publication, the encyclopedia became a staple in school libraries and middle-class households across North America. While its design evolved through numerous editions to keep pace with rapid scientific and geopolitical changes, the core mission remained rooted in the early 20th-century progressive education movement's belief that a child's ambition could be ignited by well-presented, accurate information.
