Where it came from
Concrete Revolutio: Choujin Gensou was produced as an original anime series by studio Bones, premiering in 2015. Written by Shou Aikawa and directed by Seiji Mizushima, the series was conceived as a metafictional exploration of Japan’s postwar history, using the metaphor of 'superhumans' to comment on the complex sociopolitical shifts of the Showa era. It intentionally juxtaposes stylized, retro-futuristic visuals with a fragmented, non-linear narrative structure to reflect the confusion and idealism of the time.
The production sought to deconstruct the genre of superhero storytelling by examining the ethical dilemmas inherent in state-sponsored heroism and societal regulation. Yoshiyuki Ito served as the character designer, utilizing a vibrant, high-contrast aesthetic that pays homage to 1960s and 70s Japanese manga and television tropes. While the series received critical praise for its ambitious thematic density and visual inventiveness, it was noted for its challenging narrative pacing, which polarized audiences looking for a more traditional action-oriented experience.
