Where it came from
Cooking Papa, a long-running seinen manga series by Ueyama Tochi, began its serialization in Kodansha's Weekly Morning magazine in 1985. The series was born out of the burgeoning Japanese interest in home cooking and domestic life during the late eighties, distinguishing itself by focusing on the culinary exploits of Mamoru Arai, a salaryman who keeps his expert cooking skills a secret from his office colleagues to maintain a humble exterior.
Ueyama Tochi designed the series with a focus on realism and practical instruction, notably including step-by-step recipes at the end of each chapter. This approach helped the manga transcend its role as mere entertainment, positioning it as a functional reference for readers. It has been widely praised for its consistent quality and its warm, enduring depiction of family life, leading it to become one of the longest-running manga series in history.
