Where it came from
Corpse Girl, known in Japan as Shitai o Kau, is a manga series created by mangaka Yamazaki Tooru. It emerged during a period in the late 1990s and early 2000s when the horror and dark fantasy genres were experiencing a resurgence in alternative seinen manga, characterized by a shift toward more visceral, psychological, and macabre themes that pushed the boundaries of traditional suspense storytelling.
The series is noted for its distinctive visual style, which leans into the grotesque to match its unsettling narrative premise. Yamazaki Tooru designed the work to explore themes of obsession and mortality, utilizing stark contrasts and a gritty aesthetic that resonated with a niche audience of horror enthusiasts. While it remains a cult title rather than a mainstream hit, it is frequently cited by collectors for its commitment to a singular, bleak artistic vision that defines the darker corners of the manga industry from that era.
