Correspondence of Thomas Gray and William Mason; to Which Are Added Some Letters Addressed by Gray to the Rev. James Brown ...

This volume serves as a significant scholarly compilation of the personal letters exchanged between the poet Thomas Gray, best known for his Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard, and his close friend and literary executor, William Mason. Originally edited and published in the mid-19th century by John Mitford, the work was designed to shed light on Gray's private character, intellect, and creative process during the mid-18th century. By curating this correspondence, Mitford sought to preserve the intimate reflections of a notoriously reclusive figure whose letters had become essential reading for understanding the intellectual climate of the period.

The editorial intent behind this collection was to provide context to Gray’s life by including the additional letters addressed to the Reverend James Brown, the Master of Pembroke College, Cambridge. These documents were meticulously compiled to offer a window into Gray's scholarly pursuits and his lifelong attachment to the university. While contemporary editions often serve as reprints for archival study, the original curation was lauded for its diligence in organizing scattered personal records, ultimately cementing Gray's reputation as one of the most eloquent and thoughtful letter writers of the 18th century.
