Cowardly Crybaby Shokatsu Koumei

Cowardly Crybaby Shokatsu Koumei, written by Kenichi Sakemi, reimagines the legendary strategist Zhuge Liang, known as Shokatsu Koumei in Japanese, as a figure characterized by profound anxiety and human vulnerability rather than unassailable genius. Published in the early 1990s, the work emerged as a literary subversion of the grand historical epic Records of the Three Kingdoms, shifting the focus from military conquest to the internal, often humorous, neuroses of a man thrust into a role of immense responsibility.

Sakemi, who gained prominence for his unique approach to historical fiction, aimed to humanize the stoic figures of Chinese antiquity by imbuing them with contemporary anxieties and relatable flaws. The design of the narrative prioritizes character study over tactical accuracy, finding its strength in the ironic contrast between Koumei's reputation and his quiet, fearful internal life. Upon its release, the volume was noted for its refreshing departure from the typical heroic tone of the period, gaining a dedicated following among readers who appreciated character-driven satire.
