Crest of the Stars, written by Hiroyuki Morioka and illustrated by Toshihiro Ono, debuted as a light novel series in 1996 under the Hayakawa Bunko JA imprint. Conceived during a period of burgeoning interest in space opera within Japanese science fiction, the story follows Jint Linn, a young man from a planet annexed by the expansionist Abh Empire, and his unlikely partnership with Lafiel, an Abh princess. Morioka sought to create a linguistically rich universe, even developing a constructed language for the Abh, which lent the series a distinct intellectual weight compared to its contemporaries.
