Crowned Masterpiecaes of Eloquence Respresenting the Advance of Civilization: As Collected in the World's Best Orations : from the Earliest Period to the Present Time

Published at the turn of the 20th century, this multi-volume anthology was edited by David Josiah Brewer, an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States. The collection was curated as a comprehensive historical record of human thought, intending to capture the development of civilization through the most significant public addresses from antiquity to the modern era. Brewer sought to provide scholars and laypeople alike with a definitive library of rhetoric that defined the evolution of political, social, and legal systems.

The design of the series reflects the turn-of-the-century preoccupation with Enlightenment ideals and the preservation of Western heritage. The editorial effort involved a massive undertaking of synthesis, organizing speeches by thematic and chronological progression to illustrate the progress of human history. Upon release, the set was widely marketed as an essential acquisition for home libraries, serving as both a decorative status symbol and a substantive reference work that solidified Brewer's reputation as a public intellectual deeply invested in the intellectual foundations of the American republic.
