Curtis's Botanical Magazine

Founded by William Curtis in 1787, Curtis's Botanical Magazine holds the distinction of being the longest-running botanical periodical in existence. It was conceived during a period of intense botanical exploration, intended to provide gardeners and botanists with accurate, hand-colored illustrations of exotic plants from around the world. The publication sought to bridge the gap between scientific taxonomy and the aesthetic sensibilities of the affluent gardening public, establishing a standard for botanical documentation that influenced natural history illustration for centuries.

Sir William Jackson Hooker became the editor of the magazine in 1826, a role he maintained for nearly four decades. Under his leadership, the publication expanded significantly, incorporating more rigorous scientific descriptions and overseeing a shift toward high-quality lithography alongside traditional engraving. Hooker's stewardship cemented the magazine's reputation as a vital repository of plant discovery, widely celebrated by the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, and professional botanists globally for its dedication to precise, beautifully rendered botanical art.
