Dampier no Oishii Bouken

Dampier no Oishii Bouken, or Dampier’s Delicious Adventure, was created by the manga artist known as Tomato Soup. Published by Kodansha, the series focuses on the historical figure William Dampier, an English explorer and pirate who was also a prolific writer and naturalist. The narrative blends historical research with a culinary lens, portraying Dampier’s 17th-century voyages through the exotic foods he documented and consumed while circumnavigating the globe.

Tomato Soup’s design approach balances historical rigor with a stylized, accessible aesthetic common in contemporary seinen manga. By centering on the biological and gastronomic observations of a buccaneer, the work subverts traditional maritime adventure tropes, focusing on how early globalization and exploration were mediated through the lens of human hunger and curiosity. The series has been recognized for its unique premise and careful attention to the historical accounts left behind by Dampier himself.
