Where it came from
Dan Doh!! Xi is the direct sequel to the original golf manga series Dan Doh!!, which was written by Sakata Nobuhiro and illustrated by Manjou Kazuki. Following the conclusion of the first series, which charted the protagonist Tsubame Aoba's rise from a young baseball enthusiast to a burgeoning golf prodigy, Xi was created to transition the story into the high-stakes world of professional golf. The narrative shift focused on Tsubame's development as an adolescent player as he grapples with the technical and mental rigors of the professional circuit.
The series remains a definitive entry in the sports manga genre of the late 1990s and early 2000s, reflecting the era's popularity of golf in Japanese pop culture. Sakata, a former professional golfer himself, infused the work with authentic terminology and strategic insights, aiming to balance instructional sports drama with traditional shonen character progression. While it did not reach the same widespread cultural ubiquity as the original series, it was well-received by fans of the genre for its consistent character development and accurate representation of tournament-style golf.
