Where it came from
Darkside Angel is a manga series authored by Hoshikawa Tomi, emerging from the vibrant landscape of Japanese shojo and supernatural manga in the late 1990s. The series reflects the thematic interest of the era in blending gothic aesthetics with character-driven drama, positioning itself within a niche of dark fantasy that aimed to explore complex moral ambiguities through the lens of ethereal protagonists.
The design of the series centers on Hoshikawa's distinct visual style, which emphasizes intricate linework and moody, atmospheric environments to underscore the melancholic tone of the narrative. Critically, the work is noted for its evocative character designs and its commitment to a specific stylistic atmosphere, which helped secure a dedicated, if modest, following among collectors of late-nineties atmospheric manga titles.
